About JupyterHub.nrw
The JupyterHub.nrw project encompasses the development of a statewide Jupyter service for North Rhine-Westphalia universities, including LMS integration, training, material development, and assessment tools, to support teaching, learning, and examinations in a digital environment.
The project’s goal is to improve the quality of teaching and research by providing low-threshold access to a pre-configured virtual working environment through a central JupyterHub for students, instructors, and aspiring researchers in NRW. Instructors will be able to use this environment to offer students practice exercises in the form of prepared notebooks and to grade submissions. This easy access to data analysis tools and scripting languages enables students to develop digital skills, regardless of time, location, or their own hardware.
The project is divided into four areas: JupyterHub, Infrastructure, LMS Integration, and Didactics.
JupyterHub: The sub-goals in the JupyterHub area include creating and maintaining container images as execution environments with the software required by users, as well as making the necessary adjustments to JupyterHub to ensure the service’s availability for all universities in NRW. Infrastructure: In the Infrastructure area, the primary goal is to ensure a stable and secure operation, including continuous updates and further development of the deployed cloud platform. LMS Integration: A sub-goal in the LMS Integration area is to integrate the JupyterHub.nrw service into university-specific Learning Management Systems (LMS) via both Moodle and ILIAS. Didactics: The sub-goals in the Didactics area involve further training for instructors to support the didactic integration of Jupyter Notebooks into teaching, and supporting students in using Jupyter Notebooks.
